The Story Project
Peer Editing & Collaborating Groups

The Story Project will be a yearlong undertaking for each History student. The goal of the project is for you to demonstrate an understanding of the material we are covering by expressing yourself in your own unique way. You are going to turn what you have learned in history class into a work of Historical Fiction.

You will have flexibility to get creative with the storytelling. You can do this in whatever way you choose (first person, third person, a “journal entry”, a “blog” from that time period, etc). This is a project that you will need to work on outside of class; however, most days after a test you will get a class period to work on it.

This project will accomplish multiple goals. You will…
  • demonstrate what you have learned
  • reinforce the material we have already covered in a different way, enhancing your understanding of the material and helping you prepare for exams
  • retain information more effectively
  • use your imaginations
  • be able to express your creativity!
  • better understand how history is all connected
  • be able to understand history in chronological order more effectively

A few reminders…
  • You must make sure your story stays 90% a work of non-fiction. Don’t leave out any major things we have discussed in class!
  • You will occasionally be put into groups and bounce ideas off one another
  • On nights where the syllabus says “Story Project” for homework, you need to work on your story. One suggestion would be to focus on the transition between chapters/time periods for homework, so your story will flow
  • The Story Project will culminate in grand fashion at the end of the year with everyone sharing their stories!

Grading
Grading will be broken down into three different categories:

Daily Work Grade: On the days you work on your story in class, your teacher will see how well you work independently to develop your story. This will be worth a homework grade.

Monthly Progress Checks: Every month or so you will submit your story to Mr. Moore so he can review it and see how it is going. Is it flowing? Does it contain the major events and people that we have discussed? This will be worth a quiz grade.

Book completion: Once the book is done, there will be an end of the year activity which will allow you to share your story with others. The final product will be worth a test grade.
